Shade changes how often a patio gets used.

A terrace in full sun gets used at breakfast and then abandoned until evening. Putting a structure over part of it doubles the hours it is comfortable to sit there.

The gazebo

The gazebo is a solid timber frame on a shingled roof with drop curtains, set on its own paver pad that ties back to the house along a curved walk. It reads as a separate room at the end of the garden.

The pergola

The pergola is the lighter option: an open white frame over a paver terrace edged with a curved seat wall, throwing banded shade over the table rather than closing the space in.
